Europe’s Approach to the Gaza War

Strategic Council Online – Interview: A researcher of European issues said: Although more than ten months have passed since the beginning of the military aggression of the Zionist regime in Gaza and the widespread killings and destructions carried out by this regime in Gaza, we have yet to see any action by the European Union to stop it. We have not seen the genocide and crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza.

In an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Sohrab Saad al-Din said: “The European governments are actors who, despite having enough leverage to influence the Israeli regime, do not have the necessary will and courage to confront the criminal actions of this regime in Gaza. Just like America, due to the fear of the pressure of the Jewish-Zionist lobby, it has no determination to stop the war machine of the Israeli regime in Gaza and Rafah.

He explained the position of the Europeans towards the Israeli regime’s genocide in Gaza, emphasizing that the European Union has suffered a strategic failure from a moral point of view: “The positions taken by the European governments and the European Union can be divided into three categories up to this point; First, the governments that stand by the Israeli regime, have declared Hamas, a terrorist group and believe that this regime is taking an utterly defensive stance. Saad al-Din emphasized: “The second group are the governments that defend peace and, while condemning Hamas, consider the actions of the Israeli regime illegal. They believe that the Israeli regime violates human rights and international law. Some, like France, although it does not take action, but it has recognized the jurisdiction of the court in accusing the Israeli regime of violating human rights in Gaza and Rafah. Of course, the new British government from the Labor Party has also retreated from the previous government’s position and said we should recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice.

According to this expert, the third category includes governments that cannot be called pro-Palestinian and mostly support the Israeli regime, but less than the first category. This group believes that peace should be achieved.

He added: “In general, the atmosphere of leaders and politicians in Europe cannot be called the atmosphere of favoring and supporting Palestine. Of course, public opinion is not like this. In the Netherlands, 55% of people said that the government should support the Palestinians more, and only 6% said that more support should be given to the Israeli regime.

Saad al-Din further emphasized: “At the level of European Union leaders, a person like Vanderlein, who is very conservative and right-wing, tries very hard to connect the issue of Ukraine and Palestine with a strange and false simulation and claims that the Israeli and Ukrainian regimes support democracy. But Hamas and Russia threaten democracies. “On the other hand, people like Josep Burrell have tried to take a position against the war crimes of the Israeli regime.”

According to this expert, at the level of the European Union’s behavior towards the Israeli regime and the issue of the Gaza war, we see that countries such as Germany and Great Britain continue to send weapons to the Israeli regime. This regime has violated the British arms export license.

Pointing out that the Europeans have not taken practical action against the war in Gaza, he added: “They have only announced that a peace forum should be established, provide human rights aid to the Palestinian people, or take positions against the Israeli regime, while expecting this. It is to stop the export of arms to the Zionist regime by adopting a firm and decisive position.

Emphasizing that the differences between European leaders both at the level of the Union and at the level of the European countries are considerable, this expert on European issues explained: “The Europeans have no plan and ability for the future of Gaza and the end of the war; They have only put forward a series of principles, such as that Hamas should not have control over Gaza, or that the forced relocation of the Palestinian population should not take place. But this declaration of positions does not help to solve the problem.”

Regarding the consequences of the European Union’s behaviors, Saad al-Din said: “They have ignored morality and the claim of protecting human rights in the Gaza war, and this issue can tarnish the image of the Europeans in world public opinion.”
