Examining the Democrats 2020 Document & Opposition to Trump Policies

2020/08/15 | interview, political, top news

Strategic Council Online - An international affairs analyst said that the clear and comprehensive confrontation between the Democrats' 2020 document and current policies in the United States underscores the extent to which Trump's policies have targeted international security and order. He added that following the failure of Trump's policies toward Iran the Democrats adjusted their policies somewhat from the beginning.

In an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Seyed Jalal Sadatian, referring to the publication of the draft of the 2020 document of the Democratic Party and the significant contrast of the policies announced in it with the policies of the Trump administration, said: It defines foreign relations, apparently having a more peaceful tone towards Iran than the party’s program in the previous round of the 2016 US presidential election.

For Iran, No Difference between Democrats and Republicans

He praised the Democrats’ willingness to return to the Iran Nuclear Agreement, and citing issues such as rejoining the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with an aim to begin diplomacy and hold comprehensive talks to extend the limits of Iran’s nuclear program and to “resolve Iran’s threatening actions” and “missile program and said: “In pursuing America’s grand strategies there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans because, in terms of national interests, the policies defined by think tanks and decision-making centers in the United States are at odds with Iran.

The international affairs expert also spoke about parts of the Democrats document that point to the need to end open wars, reduce military intervention in Afghanistan, find a lasting and inclusive political solution in the country, and continue to be present in the Middle East and said: “Trump thought he could easily get out of the Middle East, but in the current situation he is really facing difficulties in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. On the other hand, the tariff war with China has practically spread to other areas, and today we are witnessing a kind of Cold War between China and the United States.”

Biden Wants to Go against Trump’s Policies

“Biden wants to go against Trump’s policies,” Sadatian said, noting that the Democrats’ apparent and comprehensive confrontation with the current policies in the United States underscores the extent to which Trump’s policies have targeted international security and order. He said Biden wants to go back to previous grand strategies, including resuming membership in the organizations Trump had decided to withdraw from. In fact, Trump’s policies and his slogan that he only wanted to think about the United States have faced many problems.

Referring to the domestic policies cited in the Democrats’ document 2020 on correcting the Trump Administration’s actions, the analyst said Trump’s failure to contain the coronavirus, as well as escalating tensions and unrest following anti-racist protests, have undermined Trump’s slogan about “America First” and economic development and job creation in this country.

He noted the growing popularity of “Joe Biden” compared to Trump, according to the latest opinion polls, adding that “with the release of this document, Democrats are trying to gain more votes and collect as much of Trump’s votes as they can. They say we will return to the normal conditions we had before Trump.”

Sadatian also mentioned the slogan of not trying to overthrow governments in other countries, including Iran, as another important point of this document and continued: The Americans have taken the path of trying to overthrow Iran and have not achieved results and despite all the sabotage, Iran has been able to continue on its way. Democrats have also come to the point where, despite their differences with Iran, they have to accept the reality of Iran’s existence and find themselves forced to engage with Iran.

Modification in Democratic Politics an Outcome of Republicans Defeat

The international affairs expert added: “Even if Biden comes to power, he would say we do not have any problem with Iran! We have disagreements with the Americans anyway; when Trump came to power he thought he could do whatever he wanted with Iran! He was drowned in hallucination; but he realized that Iran would not give in to these pressures.”

He emphasized that the Democrats had been waiting from the beginning to see how Trump’s maximum pressure and the sanctions on Iran would work, but they failed in their attempts. It was due to these defeats that the Democrats made some adjustments in their policies.

Democrats’ Document Not Liked by Certain Arab States

Sadatian said the Democrats’ policies toward the region, the mention of human rights issues in the Persian Gulf, and a suspicious look on military intervention in Middle East as well as criticism of the Zionist regime’s efforts to annex the West Bank of the Jordan River and the end of support for the Saudi coalition in Yemen were among issued mentioned in the 2020 document and disliked by certain Arab states in the region.

Commenting on a return to the Obama Care Plan in supporting the health and medical issues of the poor and low-income people in the United States, as outlined in the Democrats’ 80-page manifesto, the international affairs expert noted the plan could have been very effective under the corona situation but it was abrogated by Trump shortly upon his coming to power.

On the Democrats’ assessment of the public’s acceptance of policies that are often completely at odds with Trump’s policies, he said things should not be seen in black and white. There are those inside the United States who have white racism and arrogance, and Trump addressed them. In the demonstrations of the blacks Trump showed arrogance towards them and said that they are not the ones who vote for him! We have seen the rise of racist groups in the United States in recent years, and somehow the Democrats are trying to get as many votes as possible after raising issues such as trying to repair the American spirit.

Success of Democrats Has Made People around Trump Nervous

Sadatian explained: “Certainly those who pursue their own interests and the Israeli lobby, who think that any flexibility towards the countries of the region and Iran is very harmful, will not even go to the Democrats; but on the other hand, a number of ordinary people and even Trump’s party members have begun to make judgments and criticisms. Democrats are trying to absorb this sector. It seems that they have been successful so far, and this success has irritated all those around Trump, who are trying to disrupt the game in various ways, including the possible postponement of the election.

Solution to Get Out of FATF Blacklist and Get Rid of Its Heavy Costs?

Strategic Council Online – Opinion: The Financial Action Task Force, FATF, announced on Friday, February 23, that the name of the Islamic Republic of Iran remains on the “blacklist” of this international organization. A decision that was not unexpected for the authorities of our country. According to the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, one day before the release of the FATF statement, due to the current sanctions, Iran is looking for its own FATF, as it uses other tools instead of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications). On this basis, it seems that while the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon were removed from the “Grey List” of FATF in the previous reviews in June 2024, the Islamic Republic of Iran is not trying to be exempted from the blacklist. But what kind of organization is FATF, and why are some in Iran against joining it? And what is the way out of this situation?
