Impact of Normalization Agreement on Palestine Question

Strategic Council Online - Now that under the present situation of Palestine, the UAE and Bahrain have accepted Israel as a reality, under the US support, it is considered a clear betrayal of the Palestinian people and aspiration. Qasem Mohebali – Expert on Middle East Affairs

The Arab regimes of the UAE and Bahrain, within a month from each other, announced their readiness to normalize relations with the Zionist regime. Since the issue of Palestine is a general issue of the Arab world and the Arab League, normalization of the relations will have consequences for Arab countries. On the other hand, all Arab states are obliged to support the Palestinian people according to the resolutions of the Arab League. Thus, there is now a clear contradiction between normalization of relations of the Arab regimes with Israel, and their commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Under such circumstances, this action of the Arab countries will undoubtedly leave a negative impact on the issue of Palestine. In fact, the Palestinian people are completely opposed to this approach of Arab countries, and no Palestinian can accept this issue; but the fact that to what extent are the Palestinians able to express their dissatisfaction with this measure is another question. Therefore, in response to the question that whether normalization of relations of Arab regimes with Tel Aviv is possible without considering the Palestinian people and their interests and conditions, unfortunately it should be said that the process pursued by the Arab regimes indicates that they have closed their eyes to the Palestinian cause and only think of their own interests.

Just as Egypt made peace with Israel in the Camp David Accords or Jordan established relations with the Israeli regime, these countries have established relations in the same way. Of course, in order to maintain the appearance of the matter to some extent, they claim that they support the territory of the Palestinian people in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.

This is a fact of the case with regard to the law, but from an administrative point of view, such actions will cause the weakening of the support for the Palestinian rights and strengthening of the position of Israel.

From the very beginning of its formation, the Zionist regime has put on its agenda a step-by-step policy to establish itself and present Israel as a reality in the Palestinian territories among Arab countries and the Middle East region.

Through wars, including the 1967 war, the regime convinced the Arabs that the occupied territories during the 1947 and 1948 wars were an international reality and sought to incorporate them into the Security Council resolutions. At the same time, by accepting Security Council resolutions at the end of the Six-Day War and then in the October 1973 war, the Arabs practically recognized pre-1967 Israel. Therefore, on this account, what remained for Palestine was the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; but later, following the signing of the Oslo Accords between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel, the Gaza Strip was ceded to the Palestinians, and the West Bank was divided into three sections: A, B, and C and for each of the areas a future was set. There, the issue of Qods and Beit-ul-Moqaddas (Jerusalem) was postponed to the finalization of the Oslo Accords. Later, the Israelis became claimant and by making settlements and relocating the population, practically occupied East Qods. Recently, based on the same step-by-step policy, Donald Trump’s United States recognized the region as the capital of the Zionist regime. Therefore, the issue of Qods remains as an unresolved issue now, but the Zionist regime considers it part of its own territory. Israel’s next policy was to annex parts of the West Bank and with the raising of the issue of ‘Deal of the Century’ and the US support, it will annex important parts of the West Bank, including the East Bank of the Jordan River.

In the meantime, an important step that Israel has taken, and it had sought from the very beginning, is to be accepted as a reality by the Arab world and Arab countries. The first step in this regard was the Camp David Accords, then peace with Jordan and, more recently, declaration of readiness to normalize relations of Tel Aviv with Manama and Abu Dhabi. Therefore, under the present situation of Palestine, these countries have accepted Israel as a reality, under the support of the US, and it is considered as a clear betrayal to the Palestinian people and aspiration by the Arab countries.
