Dr Mohsen Eslami told the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations in an interview that the global outbreak of corona crisis could be an indicator for measuring the efficiency of governments around the world. “Countries like China and Iran exercised better management but countries like the United States and the United Kingdom that always claim to be ready to deal with crises failed to pass the test as successfully as they should have.
He said this lack of efficiency was the cause of strong protests and criticisms of the people, the media and opposition parties, adding that in the case of the United States, Trump’s “personality and perception” of politics and events should be considered along with other factors. Trump initially pursued a policy of negation and denial, but eventually realized that the policy was wrong and he stepped in for confrontational measures which caused him to lose considerable time for crisis management.
Referring to the criticisms of the American people and state governors against the central government, the university professor said the increase in these criticisms and problems was the cause of the state of distrust between the people and the central government. He added that the people did not trust their governors and took action personally waiting in long queues formed to buy bullets to prepare for attacks by assailants.
“This upsurge of distrust has led to Trump’s incompetence is getting consolidated,” Eslami said. “Although some have considered compensatory policies in the economy that have reduced people’s concerns, the consequences of the incompetence that people saw in the first phase of the central government has not completely disappeared. The issue has drawn criticism from the opposition parties, NGOs and the critical media ahead of the election.
“Under these circumstances, Trump is jeopardizing his political future, because his inefficiency in the first phase and the deadly consequences that corona imposed on the human, economic, and industrial conditions of the United States will make Trump face serious crises in short-term and in the post-corona atmosphere,” the analyst added. So corona could be the cause of Trump’s departure from the political arena of power and at the same time the cause of his intense domestic conflict.
Commenting on US officials’ consultations with European countries on handling the corona crisis and compensating for past inadequacies, he said: “With this inadequacy, what we will see in the coming months will be a policy of introversion and foreign policy will receive little attention. “Of course, corona could provide a platform for US cooperation with Europe but Trump’s stance on the World Health Organization and other countries has made it impossible for the United States to lead the efforts to counter the virus.
Referring to tensions between the United States and some countries, including China, and stressing the need for compensation, Eslami said that countries claiming to be dealing with the global crisis are cooperating with other countries, but the United States is reluctant to do so under the current situation.
“There is this weakness in Trump’s policy that he has not been able to take advantage of this opportunity to consolidate himself and compensate for his inadequacies, and he has even clashed with the World Health Organization, so these collaborations and contacts cannot be successful. Thus, we will not see corona lead to the closeness of Europe and America, because effective interactions to deal with corona have also been limited.
Eslami said corona would gradually take its victims at the level of states. The Trump administration has a problem with this crisis, and corona could deal a technical blow if it continues the same policy.
