Role of External Players in Sudanese Coup

2021/11/02 | interview, Politics, top news

Strategic Council Online- Interview: Former Iran’s cultural counsellor to Sudan stated that we witness interventions from the U.S., Zionist regime, and some of Persian Gulf countries in Sudan’s coup. He said:” It seems that the military establishment in Sudan intends to maintain their presence in power and thus to proceed with a compromise plan with the Zionist regime and to keep their thorough supremacy over internal and state affairs”.

Having pointed out to the house arrest of Sudanese Prime Minister by military establishment as well as extensive arrest of the ministers of his cabinet, Amir Mousavi Badr noted in an interview with the site of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations:” After the coup against Omar Al-Bashir, Sudanese military leaders signed an agreement with political groups based on which the supreme council of military transition and the cabinet were formed. On the basis of the agreement, it was supposed that the military commanders transfer the chairmanship of the supreme revolutionary council, now active under Abdul Fattah Al-Borhan chairmanship to civil personnel”.

Having stated that the transfer of power was supposed to be made during November 2021, he continud:” Now, it seems that the military establishment is unwilling to transfer the power; one month ago they staged a fabricated coup and now we witness riots in the East of Sudan, which is coordinated with military establishment”.

The expert of international affairs said:” in a situation when the oil of the Southern Sudan is being exported from the East of Sudan, the routes are blocked by tribes of the region with coordination of military commanders in order to completely paralyze the civil government of Sudan led by Mr. Abdallah Hamdok, the Prime Minister”.

U.S.; the Patron and Coordinator of the Coup

Having stated that it seems the U.S. is the patron and the coordinator of the coup, he added:” the Sudanese military establishment is true obedient of the U.S. commands and the coup was staged during the presence of the U.S. representative in Khartoum, the East of Sudan. Moreover, we witnessed the normalization of relations between the Sudan and the Zionist regime. The meeting of Mr. Al-Borhan with the former prime minister of the Zionist regime was in fact, an allegiance made by the military establishment with the U.S. and Israel to survive and to continue their authority in Sudanese government”.

While elaborating the process of the coup staged in Sudan, he said:” at the moment, the Prime Minister is under house arrest and a large number of his ministers and other civil members of supreme military council have been arrested. This shows that they are planning a white coup. Mr. Al-Borhan announced in a statement that a new transitional step has already been formed by the collaboration and dialog with political parties of Sudan to hold an election in future through which the power will be transferred to a civil cabinet”.

Mousavi added:” It appears that Saudi Arabia and UAE are also interfering; because the coup against Al-Bashir was also staged with the coordination of the said countries, and those military commanders now in power have always had close relations with Saudi Arabia and the UAE and acted in coordination with them. Particularly, Mohammad Hamdan Dagalo Hemetti, deputy of Mr. Al-Borhan has close relations with Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In the meantime, the role of Mr. Taha Osman, former chief of the staff of Mr. Al-Bashir who is a resident of Saudi Arabia and an advisor to the king of the country must also be brought into consideration”.

Having referred to civil and nationwide strikes of employees and civil servants of ministries and public offices of Sudan to oppose the measures taken by the army as well as three killings and more than 80 casualties in post- military coup clashes, the analyst of international affairs said:” political groups opposing the military establishment will continue their protests. Although it seems that military establishment will be able to continue their supremacy with full authority for a while, but it is unlikely to maintain their supremacy over the present situation thoroughly, until and unless they will be able to reach a new political agreement with parties as soon as possible”.

Having mentioned the Sudanese opposition to the associate membership status of the Zionist regime in the African Union and some concerns raised by the officials of the regime on the normalization of relations with the Zionists, Mousavi added:” the disputed started between the military establishment and the civil government when the civil rulers of the Sudan voted for the proposal on rejection of the membership of the Zionist regime in the African Union. Anyway, the Sudanese political parties oppose the compromise of military establishment of the country. That’s why we have witnessed their protests”.

Opposition of the Sudanese Military establishment with Formation of Transitional Government

He pointed out to the interests of the Zionist regime, her influence and practicing her power in Africa and the African Union and added:” Military establishment was showing more interest to form an interim parliament, because they know when the new parliament is set up, it will oppose the compromise. One of the items of the agreement of political parties with the Sudanese military establishment in transition step was to set up a transitional parliament. But it is two years now that the military establishment has prevented its formation; the reason: with its formation the public opinion and rank and file Sudanese people will be elected as members of such parliament, and when the majority fraction is formed and they legislate, the government has to follow the parliament’s approvals. That’s why they raise impediments before the process”.

Former Iranian cultural counsellor to Sudan said:” It seems that the military establishment in Sudan plans to finalize some issues; both to advance towards compromise with the Zionist regime and to have full authority in internal and state affairs. With all these developments, the axis containing the U.S., the Zionist regime, UAE and Saudi Arabia will have full supremacy and authority over the power in Sudan as well as the positions on foreign policy of the country”.

Having referred to the world reactions to the coup in Sudan, threatening the country with intensification of sanction against it, strong criticism of the African Union against the coup in the continent and suspension of Khartoum membership in the African Union and its effect on the reversal of political and democratic trends to Sudan, Mousavi stressed that:” unfortunately, such measures will not be effective to a large extent”.

He added:” The African Union and countries will only condemn the coup and call for political and democratic trends but they fail to take effective measure. Particularly, with reference to the coordination between the military establishment and the U.S., one can not expect a role played by other powers in African region”.

Commercial Exploitation of Peace; The Gaza Committee in Confrontation with International Legitimacy

Strategic Council Online – Report: While the second phase of the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire has begun, the establishment of the “Peace Board” chaired by Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Davos meeting (22 January 2026) has become more than a technical mechanism for reconstruction and has turned into a test for the future of the international order.
Despite the signing of the charter by 22 out of 60 invited countries, the limited presence of global leaders at the Davos ceremony and the non-acceptance of this body by the European Union and key Western countries indicate a deep divide in global perceptions of the legitimacy of this mechanism.
In this report, drawing on the analysis of Hadi Borhani, a regional affairs expert, and international data, three strategic questions are addressed: Is the Peace Board an instrument for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803 or a substitute for the United Nations? How does the hierarchical architecture of this committee intensify executive challenges in Gaza? And finally, can this body create sustainable peace without the cooperation of Palestinians and with the concentration of power in the hands of a single individual?
