Germany, France Confront US in World Health Organization

2020/08/15 | interview, political, top news

Strategic Council Online - A European affairs analyst said that the decision by Germany and France to quit talks on reforming the World Health Organization was not only to support the positions of the organization but also to support multilateralism. He said the Europeans have announced that Trump will be in power as the president of the United States only for 100 more days and his position is weaker than he imagines.

Ali Akbar Farazi, in an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, noted that Germany and France had left the WTO reform talks in protest of the US attempt to take over the leadership of the WHO reform plan: “It was almost clear to political observers that the World Health Organization reform meeting will not be held in a suitable atmosphere; Because the Americans, and especially Trump himself, had long ago launched attacks against this organization.”

He said the aim of these attacks was to divert domestic public opinion from the problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic and internal failures to address the issue and putting the blame on the World Health Organization. because from the very beginning of his tenure in the White House, Trump has tried to impose his words by undermining multilateralism and weakening international institutions and organizations.

American Behavioral Contradictions and European Opposition

The former IRI diplomat said: Trump’s behaviour in such cases is accompanied by obvious contradictions. On the one hand, he weakens international organizations or withdraws from international and multilateral treaties such as the UN Security Council, and on the other hand, it expects high-level role-playing. This contradiction has led France and Germany to explicitly oppose this behaviour at the recent WHO summit.

“This is a contradiction in the irrational and absurd behavior of the United States,” Farazi said, adding that when Washington intends to pull out of an international organization it cannot play the role of the big brother and try to lead that body. German and French opposition can both indicate that this US behaviour is fundamentally illegal and that it is a reaction to Trump’s other anti-multilateralism behaviour.

Trump’s Position Weaker than He Imagines

He stressed: “It seems that the Europeans are sending a message to the American leaders that these policies and their behaviour are intolerable. Certainly, the Europeans will stand against the weakening and abasement of these organizations.” At the same time, they announce that Trump will not be able to take the helm for more than a hundred more days and that Trump’s position is weaker than he imagines. In fact, this behaviour of France and Germany will to some extent strengthen the WHO in the current critical situation; Of course, they have to wait for the next sabotage of the United States, including by cutting the approved budget for WHO!

“Whether Trump remains in the White House or not, the Europeans will certainly follow the new path they have announced,” said the European affairs analyst, referring to the widening gap between Europe and the United States.

Farazi emphasized: “Perhaps the good thing about Trump’s actions was that he accelerated and pushed forward the idea of unity among Europeans;” Because the Europeans have repeatedly stressed the need for a united army and adopting united stances in multilateral and international organizations and support for international organizations. Trump’s presence in power, or even his absence, will gradually lead Europe to a policy that has begun languorously and with delay and needs to be accelerated. They need to form independent organizations that do not have to come up with a new solution with every move by the United States and strengthen European institutions.
