Trump’s Second Administration and the Escalation of the Taiwan Crisis
Ismail Bashiri, in an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, stated: “The policies of Donald Trump’s second presidential term regarding the Taiwan issue are largely focused on increasing pressure and intensifying the crisis.”
He added: “This trend is not limited to field developments; it also seeks to destabilize the political and economic environment of the region in favor of Washington’s objectives.”
He continued: “Arms sales and direct military support to Taiwan’s government, along with increased political threats and economic sanctions, reflect Washington’s strategy to escalate the crisis.”
Bashiri explained: “This policy is by no means confined to Taiwan’s internal affairs; its effects will also be felt across East Asia and among Taiwan’s neighboring countries.”
Bashiri stated: “The second Trump administration is attempting to exert maximum pressure on China through economic and military tools to gain strategic leverage in future negotiations. After Trump and Xi Jinping’s recent meeting and efforts to conclude a bilateral tariff agreement, this strategic dominance has become even more important for Washington.”
He added: “At the same time, this trend is creating a reinforcing cycle of escalation that could affect energy security, regional economies, and the political stability of neighboring nations.”
U.S. Influence on the Approach of Surrounding Countries
The East Asia analyst stated: “Not only is the second Trump administration seeking to intensify tensions regarding Taiwan, but China’s neighboring countries, under U.S. management, are also trying to inflame the crisis.”
He explained: “A recent example can be seen in Japan’s policies, where the sale of advanced American weapons to Taiwan and remarks by Sanae Takaichi, the newly elected prime minister of Tokyo, have heightened tensions with Beijing.”
He added: “These actions are not merely reactions to China’s threats; they are part of a coordinated strategy aimed at pressuring Beijing and maintaining U.S. capabilities in East Asia.”
Bashiri emphasized: “Washington is leveraging its allies around China—including Japan and other regional states—to increase diplomatic and military pressure on Beijing.”
He explained: “Statements by Japan’s prime minister about the possibility of a military response to China’s threat in Taiwan reflect this strategy, coordinated with Washington and intended as a clear warning to Beijing.”
Bashiri added: “This trend not only complicates the region’s political and security equations but also increases the risk of unpredictable military tensions.”
The Message of China’s Major Military Drill with the Presence of Foreign Leaders to the U.S. and Its Allies
The East Asia analyst further referred to China’s recent drills—especially the unprecedented exercises attended by leaders and officials from other countries in Beijing—and said:
“These drills have pushed the Taiwan-related calculations of Beijing and the West to an unprecedentedly fragile point.”
He added: “The intensity and scale of these exercises send a clear message to the U.S. and its regional allies, demonstrating China’s readiness to counter any form of military intervention.”
Bashiri stated: “Despite this fragile moment, Xi Jinping possesses the necessary prudence to prevent Taiwan from turning into an example similar to Ukraine.”
He explained: “Beijing is trying, through precise political, economic, and military management, to control the crisis and prevent it from escalating into a direct war.”
He stressed: “China’s warnings to Japan and other countries that they would face severe and crushing defeat in the event of intervention demonstrate Beijing’s high deterrence capability and the seriousness of China’s defensive policies. These actions, coupled with active diplomacy, can keep the region’s security dynamics balanced and prevent a full-scale crisis.”
The East Asia expert stated: “The current situation in East Asia is at a sensitive point due to the actions of the U.S. and its allies in the region, along with China’s simultaneous deterrent measures.”
He added: “Any miscalculated move could escalate tensions and lead to uncontrollable crises, but Beijing’s prudence and precise strategies have so far prevented the Taiwan issue from becoming a crisis similar to Ukraine.”
Ismail Bashiri also emphasized: “The current policy of Trump’s second administration and the simultaneous actions of U.S. allies in East Asia indicate an effort to intensify the crisis and impose maximum pressure on China. However, Beijing’s experience and crisis-management capacity can steer these dynamics toward relative stability.”
