Strategic Council Online: Referring to the recent desecration of the Qur'an in Sweden and Denmark, the President of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, while holding the governments of these two countries responsible, said: “Although we welcome the position of the UN Secretary-General in response to Ayatollah Sistani's letter, it is important that the UN defines the criteria of freedom of expression by passing a resolution, so that no one can insult the religious beliefs of believers, including the 2 billion Muslims of the world, under the title of freedom of expression.”

Dr. Seyed Kamal Kharrazi, in a meeting with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, said he had recently seen a clip of the Danish police helping a person who wanted to burn the Quran. While a woman was trying to save the Quran from the flames, the Police attacked her and grabbed the Quran from the woman’s hand so the Quran burner could carry out his heinous act. “Isn’t this the support of the police and the Danish government for someone who burns the Quran?”

Pointing out that such measures have angered Islamic countries and provoked strong public reactions, especially in Iraq, he clarified: “The necessity of reaching a resolution in the United Nations on this matter is clear, while it should not be forgotten that the governments are responsible.”

In this meeting, the President of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations also mentioned the American intervention in Iraqi affairs, especially Washington’s attempt to obstruct the economic relations between Iran and Iraq, is harmful to the security and stability of Iraq and said: “American pressure on the Iraqi government preventing the payment of the country’s debt to Iran will have no result other than increasing the suffering of the Iraqi people and their dissatisfaction with the Iraqi government.”

Dr. Kharrazi also stressed the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq and stated: “Considering the law approved by the Iraqi parliament regarding the withdrawal of all foreign troops from the country, it is necessary to respect the will of Iraqis who have a long history of civilization, and a personality to oppose the policies dictated by foreigners. They can run independently and secure their country.

Dr. Kharrazi also pointed to the UN report regarding Iran’s defense measures against the bases of separatist terrorist groups in Iraq and emphasized the necessity of a realistic look in compiling these reports and said: “Iran, based on its right of self-defense and in response to the terrorist groups’ activities, has no choice but to take necessary measures.”

Mrs. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, pointed to the security agreement between Iran and Iraq and the parties’ emphasis on its full implementation and hoped this would prevent such problems.

In this meeting, she also expressed her satisfaction with her trip to Iran, appreciated Iran’s positive role in helping Iraq, and hoped that regional and international actors support advancing the Iraqi government’s plans for political stability, security, and prosperity.

She also emphasized the readiness of the United Nations to cooperate with Iran to hold specialized meetings, including on dust storms and climate issues.
