The SCFR president, who was invited by the Austrian host to attend the 22nd Vienna Meeting of the European Forum, met with former Austrian President Dr. Heinz Fischer.
In this meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations, Iran-EU relations, and regional and international issues.
Fischer said that significant developments had taken place in the region, especially in relation to Iran and the new US sanctions, expressing the hope that the Iranian government would overcome these problems.
Referring to the regional issues, in particular in Yemen, he said: “The war in Yemen has brought misery to the people and we must provide opportunities for the end of this war.”
Fischer expressed hope that supply of weapons to countries that are fighting Yemen would stop.
Dr. Kharrazi briefed Fischer on the economic situation in Iran after the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the newly imposed sanctions by Washington. He stated: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to fulfilling its JCPOA obligations, but unfortunately, the United States has violated the nuclear agreement and it is no more trustworthy.” He said one reason that Iran is not prepared to enter dialogue with the current US government is that it does not adhere to its commitments.
He went on to underline the stabilizer role of Iran in the region, particularly in the fight against terrorist groups and in assisting the Iraqi and Syrian governments.
Dr. Kharrazi too described the Yemeni war as a ‘cruel war’ and expressed concern about the fact that the world, and especially the West, did not pay attention to the tragedy. He also regretted that the people of Yemen and its schools and hospitals were being destroyed by certain countries and urged the international community to take immediate action in ending the war.
