Iraq against normalization of relations with Zionist Regime

2020/09/28 | interview, political, top news

Strategic Council Online -interview: The people, religious establishment, parliament and political and resistance groups in Iraq are opposed to any probable normalization of relations with Zionist Regime, an expert of West Asia affairs says.

Reza Mirabian added that the Iraqi establishment will not allow this to happen as Iraqis do not consider this legitimate, referring to the issue of statements by the Iraqi resistance groups against normalizing ties with Israel.

He said several influential Iraqi groups have warned Netanyahu against any move to open an Israeli embassy in Baghdad, adding that Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has advised both the Iraqi and Israeli governments against any decision to establish relations with the Zionist regime.

Referring to the political and cultural structure of Iraq which totally reject such a decision, Mirabian said Iraqi foreign minister has underlined the need to abide by the demands of the Arab society.

“Although Fuad Hussein was expected to adopt a stronger and more decisive stance, he does not suggest in any way that the Iraqi government is considering normalizing relations with Israel.”

Referring to the criticisms by resistance groups of the recent position stated by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on the UAE-Israel normalization of relations, Mirabian said al-Kadhimi failed to condemn this normalization and considered it a domestic issue for the UAE.

“It should be noted that Mr. al-Kadhimi is not the person who is going to determine the policies and approaches as well as the future of Iraq. He is a prime minister of the transition period and temporary. He may have to leave the government in future. The general policies of Iraq are formulated by the MPs and religious authority who would not basically allow such desires to fulfill.”

Referring to the opposition of Iraqi resistance groups to some of the positions held by the Iraqi premier including on the US military presence, Mirabian said American troops should should pull out as per the approval of the Iraqi parliament which will be valid permanently and the next Iraqi government should be executing it.

“What is important is that most Iraqi politicians want this parliament approval implemented while Iraqi people are not interested in hosting American bases and troops.”

Referring to the statement of al-Nujabad resistance group in condemnation of the normalization of relations of the UAE and Bahrain with the Zionist regime, he said, the political and religious establishment in Iraq are opposed to any rapprochement with Israel.

“The situation in Iraq is different from the situation in UAE or Bahrain even though there are some political currents that may be desiring normalization. The people, religious authority, parliament, major political groups and resistance front in Iraq will not allow this to happen. Resistance groups in Iraq issued serious warnings and statements, considering normalization illegitimate. In fact, all recognized Iraqi parties and groups have adopted very clear positions on any rapprochement by some Arab countries with Israel.”
