Europe’s Fulfillment of JCPOA Commitments A Big Test of Independence

Strategic Council Online: President of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Dr. Kamal Kharrazi says Europe’s implementation of its commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and accelerating the conditions for Iran to benefit from economic and trade exchanges with Europe is an important test for Europe's independence, because the United States is trying to destroy the JCPOA by threatening Iran and humiliating Europe at the same time.

Dr. Kharrazi met with Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Secretary of State to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs in Paris on Monday.

Pointing to the meeting of the French, German and British Foreign Ministers in Brussels, he noted: “Despite US pressures, we are honestly working to operationalize the INSTEX so that the Iran Nuclear Agreement would survive.”

He added that the implementation of the nuclear deal is not just a test for European independence but is aimed to maintain the NPT. He also expressed hope that Iran will help the realization of this process by continuing its JCPOA commitments.

Hailing the importance of the long-standing relations between Tehran and Paris, Lemoyne emphasized on strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional dialogue.

Dr Kharrazi also welcomed the efforts of France and its European partners to operationalize the INSTEX, noting that Europe’s implementation of its JCPOA commitments and accelerating the conditions for Iran to benefit from economic and trade exchanges with Europe is an important test for Europe’s independence, because the United States is trying to destroy the JCPOA by threatening Iran and humiliating Europe at the same time.

Dr. Kharrazi added that the recent decision of Tehran has been taken at the highest level and is irrevocable. “We, therefore, hope that with the rapid accomplishment of European commitments there would be no need for Iran to take the next steps in suspending its JCPOA commitments.”

The SCFR chief also pointing to the attacks of the Saudi coalition in Yemen and the continued bombing of the innocent people in the country stressed the need to stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia and halt the bombings. He also expressed hope that with the continuation of the political process in Stockholm, the Yemeni people could freely and without foreign interference decide their own destiny.

Dr. Kharrazi further described Iran’s stabilizing role in the region and Tehran’s readiness for dialogue with other regional countries for the cause of peace and security and said Europe’s concern over Iran’s missiles was unsubstantiated stressing that Iranian missiles cannot carry nuclear warheads and are meant for defensive purposes.

In addition, the SCFR President said calls for negotiations on strategic weapons of countries is unjustifiable and no country would accept to negotiate on its strategic weapons.
