Signals of Failed US Anti-Palestine Resolution

2018/12/29 | Opinion, political

Strategic Council Online: A resolution that would have condemned the Palestinian group Hamas and its attacks on Israel failed to pass the United Nations on Thursday, despite an aggressive campaign by the United States and Israel to cast it as a vote on peace and terrorism. Hassan Hanizadeh - Middle East Expert

The U.S.-drafted resolution got 87 votes in favor and 57 against, with 33 abstentions, meaning it fell short of the required two-thirds majority needed to pass.

The vote also represented a political setback for the Trump administration, which had lobbied hard to get many Arab states to break from their routine support of the Palestinian position and support the anti-Hamas resolution. But all the Arab states voted against it, even those that have signed peace treaties with Israel and are otherwise seeing warming relations with its government.

It passed despite intimidation by Trump, who had threatened a day earlier to eliminate financial aid to member states who would vote against his decision, while Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, had warned that she would be “taking names” of those countries.

(The UN General Assembly also voted on a second resolution offered by Ireland and Namibia and pushed by the Palestinian Authority, in favor of a two-state solution. It includes condemnation of Israeli settlements and a reference to the parameters of a future peace agreement).

The resolution of the UN General Assembly states that any decision that leads to a change in character, status or population composition of Jerusalem is null and void and that UN member states should act in accordance with Security Council resolutions and not open diplomatic missions in Beitul Moqaddas.

It should be noted that the recent failure of the United States to advance the so-called “deal of the century” and tensions in relations between Washington and Riyadh has changed the political equations of the region and the world in general in the interest of the Resistance Movement. The United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia have tried to marginalize the Palestinian cause over the course of the past two years by operationalizing the “deal of the century”. Under this plan, Jerusalem would be recognized as the capital of the Zionist regime forever, the issue of the return of the Palestinian refugees would be forgotten, and in return, Riyadh would provide $10 billion in aid to the Palestinian Authority annually. But the return of the Intifada faced the Deal of the Century with deadlock.

On the other hand, the adoption of two resolutions in support of the Palestinian people at the UN General Assembly showed that the conscience of the international community remains awake and completely alert against the conspiracy of America-Saudi-Israel trio. Although the two resolutions passed at the General Assembly are non-binding yet it has strongly undermined the dignity of the United States and supporters of the Zionist regime.

In rejecting the US-drafted resolution at the United Nations in condemnation of Hamas, it should be noted that Donald Trump’s aggressive policies and his open support for the two hated regimes of Saudi Arabia and Israel produced adverse consequences for the United States. The tragic murder of opposition Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Trump’s support for Saudi crown prince Mohamed bin Salman and the explicit admission by the US president that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Zionist regime, has caused public opinion to be strongly opposed to the aggressive and illogical policies of Washington. So, both the United Nations and the US institutions have strongly lined up against the White House policies, and now the United Nations and the US Congress have joined the lineup against the White House.

The US president seems to be facing more challenges in the domestic and foreign policy arenas in 2019; in this regard, the recent Senate resolution in condemnation of Mohamed bin Salman has highly isolated the White House.

In the meantime, the policy line of certain European countries in relation to Palestine is unclear. Despite the support of some small European countries for the Palestinian cause, the efforts of countries such as UK, France, and Germany are aimed at weakening the Resistance and strengthening the Zionist regime. The support of these European countries for the US policies on Israel and Saudi Arabia will isolate them before the public opinion in the future.

Regarding the achievements of such resolutions, it should be noted that, after the recent General Assembly meeting on Palestine, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Israel were severely isolated as a destructive triangle of the region and the world. Instead, the Palestinian people, relying on international support for the intifada will continue their fight. On the other hand, the Zionist regime has been isolated politically over the past weeks after its defeat in the two-day Gaza war and the resignation of some ministers of the Benjamin Netanyahu cabinet. The Palestinian people will now be able to stand up against Israeli aggressions using their indigenous capabilities.

Solution to Get Out of FATF Blacklist and Get Rid of Its Heavy Costs?

Strategic Council Online – Opinion: The Financial Action Task Force, FATF, announced on Friday, February 23, that the name of the Islamic Republic of Iran remains on the “blacklist” of this international organization. A decision that was not unexpected for the authorities of our country. According to the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, one day before the release of the FATF statement, due to the current sanctions, Iran is looking for its own FATF, as it uses other tools instead of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications). On this basis, it seems that while the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon were removed from the “Grey List” of FATF in the previous reviews in June 2024, the Islamic Republic of Iran is not trying to be exempted from the blacklist. But what kind of organization is FATF, and why are some in Iran against joining it? And what is the way out of this situation?
