A Look at Trump’s Expansionist Goals

Strategic Council Online – Opinion: Trump has outlined an important part of his aspirations as the goals of his four-year term.

NAFTA

Among his goals is canceling the NAFTA agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the United States, based on which the three North American countries have established a tariff-free trade bloc. This agreement was signed in 1993, and the three countries formed a free trade area, such as the European Union, which is still in effect. Trump wants to cancel this agreement because China and several other countries have established their plants in Mexico and Canada and are exporting their goods, especially electric cars, to the United States at low prices. American automakers have also practically lost their competitiveness in the American and global markets.

Greenland

Greenland is an island located between Northern Europe and the Atlantic Ocean. This island is relatively large but sparsely populated and covered in ice and snow. According to the UN Charter, Greenland belongs to Denmark and is part of its territory. However, according to the resolution of the Danish Parliament, the people of Greenland are allowed to hold a referendum and have independence if the majority votes for this option. This issue has been raised several times in the past. The United States has a military base in Greenland. Russia also monitors Greenland. It has been revealed to some extent that Greenland has rich lithium, uranium, and rare mineral resources that will play an important role in the world economy in the next decade.

In fact, access to Greenland is not only geopolitical but also plays a more critical role in geoeconomics for the United States. The United States wants to strengthen its foothold in the polar regions by acquiring Greenland. Of course, Russia and China are also sensitive to this region. Some geo-strategists consider the polar regions to be the future Middle East of the world.

Panama Canal

This canal was actually built by the United States and offered to the Republic of Panama. According to the agreement signed after the canal was handed over to Panama in 1914, the United States is responsible for its security. The United States stationed its navy in Panama during various periods, such as World War II. Now, Trump considers the Panama Canal to belong to the United States.

On the surface, Trump is saying that the canal was built by the United States with the money of this country, but now its ownership is in the hands of Panama, and its use is public. Of course, ships pay for passage, which is the Republic of Panama’s main income source. In fact, the battle for corridors, waterways, and cargo transit corridors is becoming more serious every day because dominating the corridors is one of the most important parameters of the geostrategic power of countries.

Canada

Trump has repeatedly spoken of turning Canada into the 52nd state of the United States, which has been met with strong opposition from Canadians. After Trudeau’s recent resignation from Canada, the party and the person who will most likely become the country’s future prime minister is someone with Trump’s behavioral characteristics. The truth is that Canadians have never liked America and believe that America steals Canada’s oil and gas.

Now, we have to wait and see what the future of Canadian leadership will be like. Does the potential Canadian Prime Minister want Canada to leave the Commonwealth? Does he want Canada to leave the British monarchy and have a presidency? On the other hand, in Quebec and the French-speaking regions of Canada, the French-speaking part of Canada, there is talk of independence from Ottawa, which is portrayed as a complicated situation. The Trump team is unpredictable. The world needs to prepare for the era of Trump 2, or in other words, the era of a real “regime change” in America.
