Reflection on the Reduction of Turkey’s Economic Relations with the Zionist Regime

Strategic Council Online – Opinion: According to Turkish officials, this country has suspended its trade relations with the Zionist regime due to its military actions in Gaza and the deterioration of the humanitarian disaster and has made a commitment until Tel Aviv allows humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza. If not, it will continue to cut off its business relations. Hamid Khoshayand - expert on regional issues

In response to Turkey’s action, the Minister of Finance of the Zionist regime has announced: “Israel will cancel its free trade agreement with Turkey, and also in retaliation for the Turkish president’s decision to stop exports to Israel, a 100% tariff on other imports.” applies from Turkey.”

He also emphasized threatening literature, which is considered a form of humiliation of the Turkish people: “If at the end of Erdogan’s presidency, the citizens of Turkey choose a wise leader and not one who hates Israel, it will be possible to restore the trade route with Turkey.”.»

Israel Katz, the foreign minister of the Zionist regime, has also announced that this regime will try to reduce any economic relationship between Ankara, the Palestinian Authority, and Gaza. Currently, Turkey is the largest supplier of goods to the Palestinian Authority, with a total import of about 18%.

It is worth noting that since the Justice and Development Party came to power in 2002, despite the escalation of diplomatic tensions at different times, trade between Turkey and the Zionist regime has grown noticeably. Between 2010 and 2021, bilateral trade volume more than doubled from $3.4 billion to $8.4 billion. Turkish exports to Israel in 2023 were worth 5.4 billion dollars.

Regarding the termination of Turkey’s trade relations with the Zionist regime, there are significant points, the most important of which are mentioned below:

One: The announced action of the Turkish government based on the termination of trade relations with the Zionist regime does not include other areas of cooperation between the two sides, including diplomatic and security relations, etc. In other words, in other fields, no new developments have occurred in the relations between the two sides, and their relations still stand. However, it seems that with the continuation of the current trend of “politics and power” in Turkey, we can see a decrease in relations in other areas of bilateral relations in the future.

Two: The termination of Turkey’s economic and trade relations with the Zionist regime, if implemented, is considered a “valuable action” that shows the Erdoğan government’s sense of responsibility in stopping the crimes of the usurper regime in Gaza, which can play an “effective” and “strengthening” role in the developments related to Gaza war to play.

Although the Turkish government has made the resumption of business relations with the Zionist regime dependent on the agreement of this regime to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, for Turkey and its public opinion, it is undisputed that warmongering and genocide are among the “stable policies” of the Zionist regime towards the Palestinians; Therefore, commercial relations with this regime, which means creating “breathing space” for its continued existence, are to the detriment of the Palestinian nation.

Three: There are various factors and components in both domestic and foreign arenas that are involved in the recent policy of the Turkish government to review business relations with the Zionist regime.

The refusal of the Biden administration to determine the time frame of Erdoğan’s visit to Washington, the regional and international concerns about the continuation of the current process of the Gaza war, which is still ongoing, turning the war into a “personal issue” for Netanyahu, as well as important challenges, especially at the level of public opinion and rival parties. In contrast to the current and future situation of the ruling political currents in the friendly and partner countries of this regime, there are important issues that definitely play a role in the “gradual change” of Ankara’s calculations and the revision of business relations with the Zionist regime, and Mr. Erdogan’s government is more than this. He could not ignore them.

Four; The Zionist regime after October 7 and the Gaza war have many “differences” from before. Today, even the Western allies and partners of this regime are extremely “cautious” in their bilateral relations with Tel Aviv. In the last few months, there have been issues to ponder about the Zionist regime in the field of public opinion, world universities, international legal forums, etc., which has never been seen before and has made the continuation of bilateral relations with this regime costly for its allies; An issue that the Turkish president seems to have understood well.

Therefore, reducing relations with the Zionist regime to any extent is not only a “realistic and logical” action but also an important “achievement” in the field of Turkey’s regional and foreign policies. Even if the severance of Turkey’s business relations with the Zionist regime is “provoked” in a small way, its consequences for the Zionist regime, even from a psychological point of view, are not insignificant.

The main issue is that finally, the Turkish government, although belatedly, has come to the conclusion that the relationship with the Zionist regime cannot provide a good perspective for “politics and power” in this country. In terms of benefit-cost logic, it has less benefit and more cost.
