Limits of Ukraine’s Use of Western Weapons in War with Russia

Strategic Council Online – Interview: An expert on international issues said: The more the Ukrainian front is weakened in the war, the more likely this country will use American and European weapons to attack Russian territory and the currently occupied areas, but adopting such a decision needs the cooperation and coordination of the internal issues of these countries, especially the United States.

In an interview with the website of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Amir Ali Abolfatah said about the recent statements of the NATO Secretary General that Ukraine’s hands are tied due to restrictions on the use of weapons sent by Western allies to target positions on Russian soil and said: As time passes, the West becomes more determined to intervene more openly and directly in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Especially since it became clear in recent months that Ukraine cannot stand against Russia on its own, while the West and America also delayed sending financial aid and weapons to Ukraine. During this time, Ukraine’s ammunition was exhausted, and Russia made a significant advance.

He stated that Europe’s arms strategy is based on manufacturing weapons and selling them, not stockpiling them. Therefore, Western countries do not have weapons in their warehouses; they must build them. It is natural that the manufacture of weapons is in the production cycle. It takes time to settle.

This expert on international issues said that if the West and the United States want Russia not to win this war and not advance further, they should enter the war directly, but they have many limitations for this action, the most important of which is Russia’s threat to use a nuclear weapon if America and Europe enter the war directly./e pointed out: Regarding the issue of using and sending European American arms to Ukraine,

The important issue is whether these weapons will be used to liberate the lost territories of Ukraine or they may target Russian military and infrastructure positions. Ukraine insists that its attacks are aimed at the areas occupied by Russia and that these military attacks are carried out in these areas with any weapon to liberate the occupied areas of its own land. In contrast, Russia has a completely opposite opinion and claims the areas occupied after the start of the war consider Ukraine as its land.

Abolfatah said: In addition, there is another important concern that if these weapons go beyond the occupied areas of Ukraine and parts of other Russian cities are targeted, they will face a serious threat from Russia, in which case they may use miniature nuclear weapons or use it tactically. Therefore, the fear of the start of a nuclear war has caused Ukraine’s arms suppliers to be under pressure and act cautiously in this regard. Until today, except for England, the countries supplying weapons to Kiev have not allowed the Ukrainian leaders to use their weapons in the war.

Emphasizing that Ukraine cannot win the war with Russia through attacks and limited use of European and American weapons, this international affairs expert said that Ukraine cannot win without dragging the war deep into Russian territory with complete and comprehensive equipment. However, this is not necessarily related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine; rather, it is related to other important political and international factors that the current American leaders consider.

He added: But if the hope of Ukraine’s victory in the war with Russia gradually disappears, maybe America will agree to lift the restrictions on the use of European and American weapons in the occupied parts and beyond; but this is not necessarily related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but other important political and international factors that the current American leaders consider.

Abolfath said: If US President Joe Biden is retained in the next round of presidential elections in November, America will probably make such a decision. However, if Biden loses and Donald Trump takes office, and at the same time, we see Russia advancing on the ground, America must accept defeat in the proxy war with Russia.

He pointed out that allowing the use of American weapons carries a high risk, which may lead this country to an official and direct conflict with Russia. Russia’s military strategy is that if an entity threatens it, it can use nuclear weapons, and this is an issue that American leaders must pay special attention to. However, the weakening of the Ukrainian front may push the US, Europe, and NATO toward Kiev using their weapons in the war against Russia.
