Dr. Kharrazi, during his meeting with Hikmat Hajiyev today, expressed hope for the expansion of Tehran-Baku relations. He said, “We believe that the countries of the Caucasus region are mature enough to defend their territories. Experience has shown that the presence of foreign forces in a country does not necessarily prevent aggression against it, and we welcome the Republic of Azerbaijan’s opposition to the establishment of foreign military bases in the country.”
He also welcomed the peace negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, stating, “We hope these talks will lead to a comprehensive peace between the two countries and that the necessary cooperation among Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Russia, and Turkey will be realized to elevate the Caucasus region.”
Dr. Kharrazi added that countries must consider the sensitivities of their neighbors and expressed his concern over the presence of the Zionist regime in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The President of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations pointed to the rich shared cultural heritage between the two countries, as a strength in developing bilateral relations, stating, “On the foundation of this rich culture, relations can be enriched, and minor differences should not hinder the expansion of ties between the two countries.”
Hikmat Hajiyev, for his part, noted that there is a historic opportunity to deepen relations between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan. He emphasized that Baku is ready to cooperate with Tehran in developing the North-South transportation corridor and the Aghband-Kalaleh route to connect with Nakhchivan.
