Strategic Council Online: The president of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations said in a meeting with Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen that the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which was mediated by China, will contribute to ending the war in Yemen.

Dr. Kamal Kharazi stated that I appreciate your efforts in establishing a ceasefire that came into effect on 2nd of October 2022, even though it is expired, and has been violated many times.

Referring to the negotiations on the exchange of prisoners of war, the president of SCFR hoped that these negotiations would go well, adding that “resolving humanitarian issues during the war is a positive step to start peace negotiations.”

Dr. Kharrazi emphasized that we believe in Yemeni-Yemeni negotiations, without the interference of regional and international powers, and added that such a process has our support.

Stating that “ the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia contributes to the goal of ending the war in Yemen, the president of the Council added that “we witness changes in Saudi Arabian policy, which reflects their understanding of the futility of this war. Now they have realized that despite about 9 years of war, killings, and destruction, they have not achieved victory.

At the same time, Dr. Kharrazi expressed his concern about the violation of Yemen’s territorial integrity and stated that the news about the occupation of Socotra Island by the Emirates or the division of Yemen into two northern and southern parts is a major cause of concern. These developments can endanger the security of Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea.

Dr. Kharazi stressed that we must respect the territorial integrity of Yemen and the capability of the Yemeni people to resolve their differences in the Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue process, and help them to achieve peace and establish a government based on the will of the Yemeni people.

Hans Grundberg, the UN Secretary General’s special Envy for Yemen, expressed his hope that the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia would have a positive impact on the termination of the war and the promotion of peace in Yemen.

Explaining his latest diplomatic efforts in Yemen, he stated that he is trying to create the necessary conditions for peace negotiations in Yemen by conducting all parties, regional and international actors.
