US New Strategy in Syria

Strategic Council Online—Interview: An expert of Middle East issues says US marines and military forces have relocated from the northern and western provinces of Iraq to al-Hasakah in Syria, adding that such measures indicate a new scenario is transpiring to create crisis in the Kurdish regions of Syria.

Hassan Hanizadeh told the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations that “so far, most of the US military equipment has passed through Iraq’s Al-Waleed crossing east of the Euphrates and then into the Kurdish region of Hasakah in Syria.”

According to Hanizadeh, the transfer of American forces from Al-Qaim area, Al-Waleed crossing and Ein Al-Assad base in eastern Syria has taken place due to the possibility of implementing the approval of Iraqi parliament last year to evict US forces and increasing the vulnerability of US Army in northern and western Iraq”.

He said the reports show that the presence of US forces in the Kurdish region of eastern Syria called Al-Jazeera is part of the strengthening of the Syrian Democratic Party and the disintegration of part of the east of the country.

Hanizadeh said Al-Jazeera region in Syria is comprised of three provinces of Deir ez-Zor, Qamishli and Hasakah, adding that two provinces of Qamishli and Hasakah are highly regarded by the United States due to the large Kurdish population in Syria, and Deir ez-Zor due to the existence of oil wells.

He said in the next three months, after the formation of a national unity government under the pressure of the Shiite political currents and factions, the Iraqi parliament will probably have to implement the former parliament’s resolution to expel American forces from the country.

He said it is normal that if the American forces stand against the will of the Iraqi people and the implementation of the resolution of the former parliament, there will be a serious confrontation between the people’s forces and the American army in the northern and western parts of Iraq, as well as in the Middle Euphrates.

“Therefore, this relocation is considered a precautionary measure so that the United States can prevent the vulnerability of its forces in different parts of Iraq”.

Hanizadeh said Syrian Democratic Party forces of Qasad are getting close to the United States, adding that these forces were recently transferred from the Idlib region of northwestern Syria to the Kurdish region of Hasakah under the supervision of US Marines east of the Euphrates. The scenario ahead is said to be that the forces of the Syrian Democratic Party have reached an agreement with the United States to pave the way for an Israeli presence east of the Euphrates in exchange for the formation of an autonomous Kurdish region in Qamishli and Hasakah.

He said that the formation of this autonomous region will pave the way for the possible formation of a large Kurdistan in northern Iraq and eastern Syria, and this can gradually and in the long run expand the sphere of influence of the Zionist regime in the Kurdistan region and east of the Tigris.

“If this scenario is implemented, it will definitely pave the way for the separation of the eastern regions of Syria from the body of the central government,” he said, stressing that the Syrian government is highly sensitive to US moves in Algiers, Qamishli and Hasakah.

UN silence on US plan to downsize Middle East countries

“Unfortunately, the United Nations, the Arab League and the international community have remained silent on the joint US-Zionist conspiracy to divide Syria, which shows that the US plan is to downsize the Middle East and it has already begun in action,” the Middle East expert said.

“On the other hand, Turkish forces continue to occupy a significant part of the territory of Idlib province in northwestern Syria in order to prevent the establishment of relations between the Syrian Kurds and the Turkish Kurds,” he said. “Any change in the region’s geopolitics that would strengthen the Syrian Kurdish presence is considered a potential threat to Turkey’s social and political structure.”

Asked if players such as Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran would allow the US to make a change in the geography and political and demographical structures of Syria, he said normally, any change in the geopolitics of the region, whether in Syria or in the South Caucasus, will be met with reactions from countries such as Iran, Russia, and possibly China; Because the plan to downsize the countries of the region will mean the simple and easy domination of the United States over a part of East and West Asia.

“According to the plan, the United States is trying to hand over the management of the newly established countries to some of its allies in the region through the disintegration of the countries in the region. The plan was put on the agenda under former US President George W. Bush as the Greater Middle East, but is now being reconsidered by Joe Biden’s team due to rising costs from the US military presence in West Asia”.

On the outcomes of implementing such a plan, Hanizadeh said “if this plan becomes operational, the role of the Zionist regime for physical presence in the region will increase; Especially now that the Zionist regime has a strong presence in the Kurdish regions of Iraq, Azerbaijan, Bahrain and the UAE to play its proxy role in the region at the right time.”

Solution to Get Out of FATF Blacklist and Get Rid of Its Heavy Costs?

Strategic Council Online – Opinion: The Financial Action Task Force, FATF, announced on Friday, February 23, that the name of the Islamic Republic of Iran remains on the “blacklist” of this international organization. A decision that was not unexpected for the authorities of our country. According to the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, one day before the release of the FATF statement, due to the current sanctions, Iran is looking for its own FATF, as it uses other tools instead of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications). On this basis, it seems that while the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon were removed from the “Grey List” of FATF in the previous reviews in June 2024, the Islamic Republic of Iran is not trying to be exempted from the blacklist. But what kind of organization is FATF, and why are some in Iran against joining it? And what is the way out of this situation?
